The team recently undertook some tree felling Sheerness, Kent. This particular tree was a Leylandii otherwise known as a conifer. Our client wanted to remove the tree to allow for groundworks to take place for a business expansion.
Before undertaking the tree felling an inspection is carried out. This is done to determine the health of the wood that’s about to be cut. For example any decay, rot, fungus and weak unions. Another reason is to see where the tree naturally wants to go and where you’re going to fell it. Sometimes it’s in your favour and other times it isn’t, this is where experience comes into play. On this occasion the tree had a slight back lean but nothing our team of qualified tree surgeons couldn’t handle.
Assisted tree felling
Due to the back lean the most efficient and safest way to undertake this tree felling sheerness was doing what’s called assisted fell. Assisted felling is basically using a rope/winch to pull the tree the direction your wanting to fell it.
After determining the method of felling a climber went up the tree to install the rope and cut any branches that would rub the rope/cable and not allow for a straight pull. A straight pull is important when carrying out assisted tree felling. The reasons behind this are, damaging your cable/rope and the other concern especially on larger limbs is putting an unknown force on a branch that could affect the fell. An example of this is twisting and snapping off the hinge.
After felling the tree, the team processed it through a wood chipper. Since this particular tree was large, the most cost-efficient way to handle the waste was to spray the wood chips into a 10-ton trailer, which they filled by the end of the day, excluding the logs that the client kept.
