]]> The team recently undertook some tree felling Sheerness, Kent. This particular tree was a Leylandii otherwise known as a conifer. Our client wanted to remove the tree to allow for groundworks to take place for a business expansion.

Before undertaking the tree felling an inspection is carried out. This is done to determine the health of the wood that’s about to be cut. For example any decay, rot, fungus and weak unions. Another reason is to see where the tree naturally wants to go and where you’re going to fell it. Sometimes it’s in your favour and other times it isn’t, this is where experience comes into play. On this occasion the tree had a slight back lean but nothing our team of qualified tree surgeons couldn’t handle.

Assisted tree felling

Due to the back lean the most efficient and safest way to undertake this tree felling sheerness was doing what’s called assisted fell. Assisted felling is basically using a rope/winch to pull the tree the direction your wanting to fell it.

After determining the method of felling a climber went up the tree to install the rope and cut any branches that would rub the rope/cable and not allow for a straight pull. A straight pull is important when carrying out assisted tree felling. The reasons behind this are, damaging your cable/rope and the other concern especially on larger limbs is putting an unknown force on a branch that could affect the fell. An example of this is twisting and snapping off the hinge.

After felling the tree, the team processed it through a wood chipper. Since this particular tree was large, the most cost-efficient way to handle the waste was to spray the wood chips into a 10-ton trailer, which they filled by the end of the day, excluding the logs that the client kept.

]]> As a local tree surgeon Sheerness a local church called me to look at some trees that were causing issues. 3 trees were being damaged by high vehicles therefore it had to be done quickly and efficiently. The only viable and safe option was to have a lane closure and 3 way lights in place and use a MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform).

As experienced tree surgeon in sheerness we took care all the necessary permits to get the lane closure. Work was carried out between 09:00 and 15:30 therefore causing less disruption.

At T.D Environmental Services rather than just remove branches to the minimum of 5.2 meters we cut above this. As a result the work doesn’t need doing as soon therefore saving the client money. For more info on legislation on tree over highways click here.

The client requested that the 2 cherry trees (being in close proximity to each other) were to be pruned to the same height. The beech tree was just a general tidy up and the client stated the work was to be carried out purely for amenity purposes.

]]> T.D was recently contacted by a local primary school for tree removal sheerness Kent. This was to undertake two tree removals. The trees to be removed was a poplar and crab apple tree. The school wanted the trees poisoned to prevent any regrowth. We had to be particularly cautious on the herbicide application as young children will be on site. Therefore we suggested eco plugs which is a plug that is inserted into the tree stump. This means neither people, animals or the enviromnent will be exposed to the product.

The school wanted to keep the wood as this will help them maintain flower beds. Our staff was also asked if they could cut up some logs into manageable pieces. The logs will be used as borders, stalls but not only that will provide habitat for insects.

]]> T.D environmental services were recently called in by a client in sheerness to deadwood their ash tree. Upon inspection of the ash tree there was a major cavity at the base. The clients children play under this tree and it was something they have never noticed before.

Ivy had just started to grow up the tree if this was established and had been let to grow we would not have spotted this defect. Which is why we always recommend to remove ivy growing up your trees.

They made the decision due to the health of the tree to remove it but not completely, the tree was reduced to around 5 meters. This was done too;

1. Keep the tree and not lose it completely, the tree may reshoot but as we have reduced the tree heavily there is minimal risk of failure.

2. This method is also known as a monolith, this provides an amazing habitat for all sorts of animals and insects.

The monolith will stand for many years and as the decay gets worse we will just reduce the height. This will reduce the risk of potential failure. Keep in mind when choosing this method on dead/declining tree regular monitoring is required to asses the longevity of the tree.
