During the peak of the hedge planting season, our team completed a large-scale native hedge planting project in Groombridge, East Sussex. The job involved planting over 1,300 mixed native hedging plants along a boundary line to create a natural screen and wildlife corridor.

What made this project particularly rewarding was the client’s choice to use biodegradable tree guards, a small decision that has a big environmental impact. Unlike standard plastic guards, these eco-friendly alternatives decompose naturally over time, meaning they don’t require removal or disposal.

It’s a common misconception that plastic guards can be left indefinitely. In reality, they should be removed before they begin to break down into microplastics, which can pollute the soil and the surrounding habitat. Choosing biodegradable guards avoids this entirely and helps the newly planted hedge blend into the landscape as it matures.

Planting Method and Aftercare

The hedge was planted using traditional hand tools to minimise soil disturbance. A careful mix of native species was selected to support biodiversity, provide year-round interest, and encourage birds, insects, and small mammals. Species included hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, dog rose, and field maple.

Before undertaking the tree felling an inspection is carried out. This is done to determine the health of the wood that’s about to be cut. For example any decay, rot, fungus and weak unions. Another reason is to see where the tree naturally wants to go and where you’re going to fell it. Sometimes it’s in your favour and other times it isn’t, this is where experience comes into play. On this occasion the tree had a slight back lean but nothing our team of qualified tree surgeons couldn’t handle.

Assisted tree felling

Due to the back lean the most efficient and safest way to undertake this tree felling sheerness was doing what’s called assisted fell. Assisted felling is basically using a rope/winch to pull the tree the direction your wanting to fell it.

After determining the method of felling a climber went up the tree to install the rope and cut any branches that would rub the rope/cable and not allow for a straight pull. A straight pull is important when carrying out assisted tree felling. The reasons behind this are, damaging your cable/rope and the other concern especially on larger limbs is putting an unknown force on a branch that could affect the fell. An example of this is twisting and snapping off the hinge.

After felling the tree, the team processed it through a wood chipper. Since this particular tree was large, the most cost-efficient way to handle the waste was to spray the wood chips into a 10-ton trailer, which they filled by the end of the day, excluding the logs that the client kept.
