The team at T.D Environmental Services recently carried out native hedge planting in Canterbury, Kent. Native hedge planting in Kent is a vital part to Kent’s countryside. This is because it provides a fantastic resource for wildlife, especially bees and birds. As with all of our hedge planting Kent we went and viewed the site. We do this to carry out soil tests and assess the site location and exposure.
The client opted for a native hedge, this was due to being able to fit in with the surroundings and a habitat for wildlife in the future. The first site preparation was to get rid of existing vegetation where the native hedge planting will be. It is important to do this because it reduces competition for water and nutrients in the soil. Although it wasn’t a requirement for our client. Once established Hawthorn based hedge mixes can be stock proof.
The native hedge is usually a mix of predominantly 50% or 75% Hawthorn or Blackthorn. There will be 5 other species in the mix, all at 5-10% each depending on what percentage of mix.

The team planted what is known in the industry as whips. whips are young trees typically under two years old. This is because they usually establish quicker than a more mature plant. The native hedge planting Kent was required to be staked and guarded to be protected from rabbits. The native hedge planting Kent covered 400 meters, this equated to 2000 plants.
At T.D Environmental Services we like to give options and alternative. Because of this we advised the client to have a larger tree every 5 meters. In future this will give a nice break to the hedge and provide additional shelter and shade.
