T.D environmental services were recently called in by a client in sheerness to deadwood their ash tree. Upon inspection of the ash tree there was a major cavity at the base. The clients children play under this tree and it was something they have never noticed before.
Ivy had just started to grow up the tree if this was established and had been let to grow we would not have spotted this defect. Which is why we always recommend to remove ivy growing up your trees.
They made the decision due to the health of the tree to remove it but not completely, the tree was reduced to around 5 meters. This was done too;
1. Keep the tree and not lose it completely, the tree may reshoot but as we have reduced the tree heavily there is minimal risk of failure.
2. This method is also known as a monolith, this provides an amazing habitat for all sorts of animals and insects.
The monolith will stand for many years and as the decay gets worse we will just reduce the height. This will reduce the risk of potential failure. Keep in mind when choosing this method on dead/declining tree regular monitoring is required to asses the longevity of the tree.
